Electric Proletariat [2005]
>> return to catalogue of works

Electric Proletariat [2005] is a re-orchestration of hope in the proles [2002]

In addition to the Orwellian idea that influenced the original work, Electric Proletariat was inspired by the notion that political organization can be enacted through the Internet and the inherent power of popular music, the influence of which can clearly be heard in the work, to convey a political message. Scored for clarinet, electric guitar, piano, vibraphone, drumset, electric violin and electric cello, Electric Proletariat is divided into seven movements, performed without pause:

  1. prologue: seeing.
  2. prolesong.
  3. assimilation.
  4. interlude: understanding.
  5. brutality.
  6. hope.
  7. epilogue: defying.
Electric Proletariat was first performed at Princeton University on October 25, 2005 by Newspeak, for whom the work was written.
